The Crime Was Bubbles

Welcome back to the Watering Hole. Trump finally said out loud why he took the Kennedy Center, and the answer is a drag queen who blew bubbles at a children's party in 2024, so on Friday a crowd nobody could agree how to count linked hands around the building. Further down, Troye Sivan is a knight in armor and Seattle deleted two words from its civil rights code.

Shit We Tried & Liked

A novel we will not shut up about, and two things for the first weekend it is cold enough to have opinions about a moisturizer.

Some links here are ShopMy commission links, so we earn a small cut if you buy something. It costs you nothing extra, nobody paid us to pick these, and it has no bearing on what makes the list. The Fruit Fly link earns us nothing at all. We have left prices off this time because we could not verify them today, so check before you buy.

Josh Silver Fruit Fly: A Novel

Josh Silver Fruit Fly: A Novel Mallory is a novelist seven years into a block. Leo is a young gay man with a chemsex habit and no fixed address. She decides his life is her next book, and the publishing industry, which has an appetite for sad and gay and dark, agrees with her enthusiastically. It is a thriller about who is allowed to tell our stories and who gets paid for it, which is a question this newsletter has some feelings about. Ocean Vuong calls it “impeccable, courageous and true.” Crooked Lane, out since August, and A24 has already optioned it for television. We are not making a cent on this one. We just want you to read it.

💬 the group chat says: does the song need the sample?

Troye Sivan released “Party” on Thursday, built on Madonna's “Music,” and gay Twitter spent the whole weekend on one question.

THE EVIDENCE. Second single from She's the Best, out October 9. Ian McKellen narrates the opening. Gordon von Steiner directed it at a castle in Berkeley, England, where Sivan plays a knight in full plate armor and eats a truly unreasonable amount of cake.

FOR THE DEFENSE. “the concept of getting the stamp of approval from ariana grande AND madonna,” wrote @glindaupland on Friday, landing on “troye sivan the icon you are.” It is at 4,500 likes and the replies are a receiving line.

FOR THE PROSECUTION. @Pri_Letterman posted a clip captioned “What the new Troye Sivan sounds like if you take away the Madonna sample.” It went up Sunday morning, it is at 3,400 likes, and it is cruel, and it is funny.

Both of them are right, which is the correct outcome of any argument worth having on a Sunday. The sample is doing work and so is he. “Music” came out in August 2000, when Sivan was five years old, and there is no version of this that is not a little bit funny. troye sivan is a knight now
