today asked chick-fil-a's ceo three times where the company stands on gay rights. he answered with a sandwich every time. honestly? commitment.

Craig Melvin asked the question three different ways. Andrew Cathy offered him a sandwich three different ways.

Cathy, who runs Chick-fil-A, sat down with Melvin for what TODAY called his first-ever broadcast interview, which aired Wednesday morning. Most of it was about portion sizes, prices and staying family-owned. Then Melvin brought up the people who protested and boycotted the chain because they believed it did not stand with the LGBTQ+ community, and asked what Cathy would say to them.

"Well, for anybody that hadn't tried us, we'd love for you to come try and have our great-tasting food and the hospitality that we're known for," Cathy said, according to The Independent's transcription. "I think that everybody that would be willing to walk in the door, they'll see that they're welcome to come eat with us."

"You don't want to talk about that chapter in Chick-fil-A's history," Melvin said. Cathy said the company was focused on serving everybody who comes in to eat.

Melvin tried once more, asking for the company's "official position on equal rights." Cathy's answer, per People: "We're focused on hospitality, serving great tasting food and great service."

the chapter he skipped

The chapter is 2012, when his father, Dan Cathy, told a religious newspaper that the family supported "the biblical definition of the family unit," NBC News reported, setting off protests and boycotts. Dan Cathy expressed regret in 2014 for involving the company in the debate while standing by his private views on marriage, according to NBC, and starting in 2020 the company narrowed its charitable giving to education, homelessness and hunger.

So the official position on equal rights, as of Wednesday, is the spicy deluxe. We will be taking our business to the drive-thru of a company that can finish a sentence.
