Somewhere a man is going to open Grindr for one reason and close it having refilled a prescription. That is the plan, and it now has a price tag.
Grindr has agreed to buy PurposeMed Inc., the parent company of the online PrEP clinic Freddie, for a base price of $250 million: $190 million in cash and $60 million in Grindr stock, plus an earnout of up to $70 million in cash, according to the company's 8-K filed Sept. 30. The deal has not closed yet. Grindr expects it to in the fourth quarter.
what grindr is actually buying
Freddie was founded in Canada in 2020 and has more than 55,000 patients, operating in five provinces "as well as across all 50 states and the District of Columbia," the press release says. Grindr is projecting more than $80 million in revenue for it this year. It will be folded together with Woodwork, the erectile-dysfunction service Grindr launched last year, per PinkNews and The Next Web, into something called Grindr Health. It is the company's first major acquisition since its founding, both the release and PinkNews note.
The pitch is the audience. "Approximately 400,000 Grindr users in the US indicate on their profiles that they take PrEP," the company told shareholders in a letter. "Grindr has a direct line to millions of gay men, and Freddie brings the medical expertise to turn that reach into care," said CEO George Arison.
He was also the one to say the quiet part. "New infections should be close to zero, and that is what we are striving to achieve," Arison said, and then, to investors, that the health business "can be as large as, if not larger than, the core Grindr business is today, and just as profitable." The grid, in other words, may end up being the waiting room.
Dr. Husein Moloo, Freddie's co-founder, said the company estimates Freddie "prevents a new HIV transmission across the US and Canada every day."
the part about the data
Here is where the group chat goes quiet. In 2018 Grindr was found to be sharing users' HIV status with two analytics companies, SFGate and CBC and the AP reported at the time, and it said it would stop. Norway's data regulator fined it 65 million kroner over user data, a fine a Norwegian appeals court upheld in October 2025. And we wrote last month that Grindr is paying 26 million pounds over the HIV status it handed to advertisers in the UK.
The Next Web flagged the history in its deal coverage, and Grindr's own release lists "our ability to address privacy concerns" among the risks. Wall Street did not love it either: shares fell on Oct. 1, closing down 4.4%, by Queerty's count.
PrEP that is easier to get is genuinely good news, and nobody reaches gay men like Grindr does. It is also a company with a record on exactly this kind of information asking to hold a lot more of it. Both things can be true. Read the privacy policy, babe.
the internet reacts
gay twitter settled it in one sentence, and then the same man spent the evening being fair about it.
grant @urdadssidepieceCall me crazy but I don’t think gay sex should be vertically integrated11,004 likesgrant @urdadssidepieceThat being said, I think hookup apps are fantastic venues to receive sexual health *info*, provide lists of resources, etc., & connect to very very basic/entry level care (e.g., HIV tests) and Grindr has done a good job at this already339 likess🛸 @dragonheirsssgrindr bought freddie?????????4 likes
