Susan Sarandon has been arrested at a protest before. In 2018 it was a sit-in on Capitol Hill over family separations at the border, and she was back on social media within hours. So when she was taken into custody on First Avenue on Thursday, the news was really the company she kept.

Hannah Einbinder, the star of Hacks, was arrested with her. So was comedian Caleb Hearon, whose fans spent the evening in a state best described as all caps. So were New York City Council members Chi Ossé and Jennifer Gutiérrez, and Darializa Avila Chevalier, the Democratic nominee in New York's 13th congressional district.

what happened on first avenue

The protest, led by Jewish Voice for Peace, blocked First Avenue at East 39th Street, near UN headquarters, as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu arrived to address the General Assembly. Officers began detaining people at around 1 p.m., a CNN team on the ground saw, and the NYPD said it took 103 people into custody. NBC New York reports that everyone taken in was later released.

Now the part the group chat will get wrong. Elliot Page was at the protest, and NBC New York, TheWrap and Consequence all report he was not arrested, whatever the early lists said. Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker were in the crowd. Chelsea Manning was among those detained, according to Jewish Voice for Peace as CNN reported it, and the New Republic and the Advocate listed her too; NBC New York describes her only as present. If the NYPD publishes a list, we will update this.

After her release, Einbinder posted a statement to her Instagram story arguing that the arrests were the spectacle and Gaza was the story, TheWrap reported. What she shouted on her way out exists in two slightly different wordings depending on which outlet you read, which is exactly why you are not reading either one here. Somebody has to be the dull one.
