The step limit was 150 a day. "Which is nothing," Hunter Schafer told ELLE, describing her recovery at the start of this year, lying down in a big rented apartment while friends and family came to visit.

What she was recovering from, she shared in the magazine's November cover story, published Monday. "I just had bottom surgery in December, which was amazing, and I love it so much."

She was candid about the road there. "Like I said, for a long time I've embraced the gender-expansive part of myself, and I really wanted to try to make that previous body work, because I thought there was something really cool and badass about it," she said. ELLE writes that she kept hitting a wall between that idea and the world she actually lived in.

where she has landed

"I'm a woman. I'm a girl," she told ELLE. She still talks about queerness the way a lot of us feel it: "On an ideological level, it's about possibility and expansion and growth, and being on that journey and finding yourself."

Schafer, 27, began transitioning at 14 and became the youngest plaintiff in the challenge to North Carolina's HB2 bathroom bill, per ELLE. Asked about new bathroom rules in the UK, she had a practical question. "You can make it the law, but are you deploying a little gender policeman to stand outside the bathrooms?"

meanwhile, the day job

She is the lead of Blade Runner 2099, playing Cora opposite Michelle Yeoh. All eight episodes premiere on Prime Video on Nov. 25, QNews reports. Yeoh, ELLE says, eventually got tired of watching her hurt herself on stunts and taught her how to fall properly. Schafer's one-line summary of the role: "I smile maybe twice."

And she has a pitch for whoever is listening. "I would just love to see a trans girl rom-com, too," she said. "I've been thinking about that for a while. I would like to make that happen." Somebody greenlight it. We will be there opening weekend, 150 steps from the couch to the car.
