HBO's Harry Potter series arrives in December with J.K. Rowling as an executive producer, which means a lot of people spent the summer quietly working out what they were going to do about that. Watch it and say nothing. Watch it and feel bad. Pirate it, which is the compromise everybody's group chat landed on and nobody wants examined.

what wachowski actually said

On Friday Lilly Wachowski took the option nobody takes, which is to answer the question directly.

Asked by Variety about the show, the co-director of The Matrix, Bound and V for Vendetta said this:

"She is funding trans genocide. J.K. Rowling funds trans genocide, full stop. So, if you support Harry Potter, you're supporting trans genocide."

She did not leave it as a slogan. She built out the mechanism, which is the part that made it travel: "The money that goes into you enjoying these products, a portion of that money goes to J.K. Rowling and that money goes into her funding anti-trans legislation all over the world."

Then she put it next to a consumer decision people already accept as normal. "In the same way that if you are against Elon Musk, you boycott or don't buy Tesla; and if you're against global warming, you try not to buy as much gas, you try to mitigate your use of these products. It's simple math. So, your enjoyment of these shows, and continued support of these shows, is supporting my eradication."

On Musk she was shorter. "There is a one-to-one connection between Elon Musk and the Nazi community. He did a full-blown Sieg Heil on a national stage." And on both of them: "These people are Nazis. They're literal Nazis."

what the rowling women's fund does

The factual spine under the argument is Rowling's money. In 2025 she established the J.K. Rowling Women's Fund, which its own website says offers legal funding to people and organizations "fighting to retain women's sex-based rights in the workplace, in public life, and in protected female spaces." In April 2025 the UK Supreme Court ruled on the meaning of "woman" in the Equality Act 2010, in a case brought by For Women Scotland, a group Rowling has funded.

rowling's agent answered the same evening

The response came fast, which tells you it landed.

By that evening Rowling's agent, Neil Blair, had given a statement to Entertainment Weekly. He opened on speech: "Freedom of speech is a principle we should all cherish." Then the correction: through the fund, he said, Rowling "supports women taking legal action in the UK to preserve their existing rights under the Equality Act 2010," and "she does not support legal actions aimed at harming transgender people or efforts to limit trans rights." He finished by saying allegations of this kind, invoking Nazis and genocide, should never be presented as fact when they are fabricated and unevidenced.

So that is the disagreement, stated plainly by both sides, and we are not going to pretend to adjudicate a defamation question in a newsletter. What we will say is that Blair's defense and Wachowski's charge are not actually about the same thing. He is arguing about intent. She is arguing about where the money ends up. You can believe a person means only to preserve one group's rights and still track what her legal fund pays for.

why it matters that it was her

The other thing worth noticing is who said it. Wachowski is not a commentator with a podcast. She co-directed one of the most influential films ever made about becoming yourself, and she has spent this year saying publicly that Hollywood will not finance her $10 million thriller because the cast is trans. The woman being told there is no money for her movies is telling you exactly where the money is going instead.

December is three months out. Everybody gets to decide what they do about it.
