On Fox News' The Big Weekend Show, Gaines said she went to the WNBA game in Minneapolis, and that "it was a bunch of disgruntled lesbians." She added that "it felt like the entire arena was booing Sophie Cunningham."

The trip was on 2 August, Fever at Lynx, and she went to support Sophie Cunningham, the Indiana Fever guard who has said keeping trans women out of women's basketball is "common sense" and that she is protecting young female athletes. Cunningham has been booed on the road since, in Minneapolis on 2 August and again against the Toronto Tempo on 19 August. That is the sum of the persecution here. Women bought tickets and then made a noise with their mouths.

The WNBA says there are currently no transgender eligibility issues in the league. Zero players. The actual attempts to put a trans woman on a WNBA roster this year came from Enes Kanter Freedom and Royce White, two former NBA men who announced they would enter the 2027 draft as trans women to make a point, and who were both blocked. Cameron Brink, who plays in the league, called the stunt what it was.

So the sequence runs like this. Two men fake being trans women to prove trans women are a threat. A player agrees with them. The crowd boos the player. And the self-appointed defender of women in sport looks up at a sold-out arena of women watching women and files a report on their haircuts.

Martina Navratilova, who has actually won things, put it to her directly. Yahoo Sports has her asking, "Hey Riley- do you enjoy insulting some women while speaking out on behalf of some (most) women? This is not ok"

Here is the thing we keep having to explain, and it never lands, so we will keep explaining it. Women's sport in this country was built by disgruntled lesbians. The leagues, the fan bases, the bars that showed the games when nobody else would, the season tickets bought in twos. The WNBA has one of the gayest audiences in professional sport and it is not a coincidence, it is the foundation. Gaines walked into the room that lesbians built and complained about the smell.
