This spring, Baltimore's ballroom scene gave Sophie Lee a title. Best New Overall Mother.
It is worth sitting with what that is, because it is not a costume. A house mother feeds people. She takes in the kid whose family stopped answering the phone. She teaches a nineteen-year-old how to walk a category and how to get home at two in the morning, and she is often only a few years older than the nineteen-year-old. Lee had ties to Gabbana, Voltaire, Pink Lady and the House of Champions. Everyone's first year as a mother is a trial run. Hers was good enough that a room full of people who do not hand out compliments voted her the best new one going.
She was 27. She was shot early Friday on the 2400 block of North Calvert Street, in Barclay, and found just after one in the morning.
what police will say
Very little, and that is part of the story. Baltimore Police spokesperson Lindsey Eldridge said it is unclear whether Lee's identity had anything to do with her death, and that the investigation is ongoing. No suspect. No motive. Detectives are asking anyone who knows something to call them.
We are not going to fill that silence in on their behalf. Four days on, the honest sentence is that nobody has said publicly why she died. Renee Lau, a special project coordinator at Baltimore Safe Haven, told the Baltimore Sun that the lack of information has left the city's whole transgender community on edge, which is what happens when a woman is killed on a corner and the official account also stops at the corner.
the room that claimed her
She was one of Safe Haven's too. "This is not only a former client of ours, but is also a friend of many of the people here on our staff," Lau said, "and it has affected us greatly, greatly, greatly."
Nearly a hundred people stood at that corner on Sunday evening holding candles. Safe Haven organized it, the way this community keeps organizing its own funerals, the way a thousand people turned up for Vincent in June. Iya Dammons, Safe Haven's CEO, said this: "She was a person. She was loved. She mattered. She deserved the opportunity to live, grow, laugh, love, and simply exist safely as herself."
The organization's written statement was shorter and louder. "SOPHIE WAS SOMEBODY'S CHILD. SHE DESERVED TO LIVE. Sophie deserved another birthday. Another laugh. Another chance to love, dream, and grow old."
Her mother is named Denise Johnson.
ten weeks after asia
Lee is the second Black trans woman shot dead in Baltimore this summer. Asia Williams was 38, and she was killed on June 23, roughly ten weeks earlier, according to the running memorial list kept by the Pittsburgh Lesbian Correspondents. That same list counts Lee as the 23rd trans woman memorialized in 2026, and the 13th of those who was Black. No federal agency publishes that number. A blogger does it by hand.
Answers, when they come at all, take their time. We wrote last week about the two women given life without parole for torturing Sam Nordquist to death. Denise Johnson does not have a suspect yet.
The title her people gave her in the spring was for looking after other people. Four months later a hundred of them stood on North Calvert Street in the dark and looked after her.

Grief first, then the argument grief always turns into.
Isabella Scarlett @IsabellaScar2STOP KILLING BLACK TRANS WOMEN. This is where ALL forms of anti-trans bigotry lead. That includes James Talarico opposing trans youth rights. That includes folks who call trans women, “men”. That includes Gina Hinojosa’s “joke” about pronouns.
