The compliment arrived in lace and silk. One of Ellie Goulding's own fan news accounts told her that her recent outfits were so feminine, and then, as screenshots circulated by Pop Flop and transcribed by Just Jared show, said it preferred them to what it called trans looks aimed at a certain community, and that it suspected she did too.

She did not, in fact, do too. At 2:12 p.m. Eastern on Sept. 26, Goulding replied: "Girl, no thank you. We don't tolerate any anti LGBTQ+ in the fandom. I know you are better than this."

That last sentence is doing the work. It is the voice of a woman who has found a vape in your jacket and is choosing, for now, disappointment over rage. The fan post has since been deleted. We could not read it ourselves, which is why you are getting it paraphrased rather than quoted, and why we are not printing the account's name: a stranger with a fan page is not a public figure, and one bad tweet does not make them one.

Her reply had passed 27,000 likes by Sunday morning, which for a three-sentence telling-off is roughly a platinum record. It also lands a day after we wrote about Nikki Glaser and a trans joke, so it is nice, for once, to file the version where the celebrity is the one doing the correcting.

A small note for the fan, from people who know fabric: lace and silk are not the opposite of a queer look. They are the queer look. Ask any drag queen what her first corset was made of.
