A lot of gay men in New York go looking for a therapist who will not need anything explained to them. Liberation Psychotherapy was supposed to be that place. The DA's office describes it as a private LGBTQ-centered practice, and its founder sometimes led its Gay Men's Therapy Group. He is now charged with sexually assaulting two of the men who came to it.

what he is charged with

Joseph LoGiudice, a licensed clinical social worker and the practice's founder and clinical director, was indicted in New York State Supreme Court in Manhattan on 24 counts: ten of criminal sexual act in the third degree, thirteen of sexual abuse in the third degree and one of rape in the third degree, District Attorney Alvin Bragg announced on Oct. 1.

Prosecutors allege the assaults happened between November 2022 and January 2026 and involved two male patients. According to the DA's office, the first joined group therapy in the fall of 2022 and was assaulted in LoGiudice's office that November, and the second was assaulted after a group session in January 2024 and again during a private session in January 2026. Both have since left the practice. Gothamist reported the same counts and timeline.

"We allege that LoGiudice abused the trust placed in him as a therapist to sexually assault members of the LGBTQ community he serves," Bragg said. "This investigation is ongoing." The charges are allegations, and LoGiudice is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.

the second therapist

This is not the first indictment out of the practice. In September another Liberation Psychotherapy therapist, Remington Yhap, was indicted on charges of raping a teenage patient, the DA's office says, and one of the men in LoGiudice's case came forward after hearing about that one.

PIX11 could not reach LoGiudice. The practice's phone line was inactive and its website and Instagram were offline, the station reported, and his attorney did not immediately respond. Gothamist said attorney information was not immediately available. We have found no public response from him. He is due back in court in early 2027, according to PIX11.

The DA's office is asking anyone who believes they were harmed to contact its Special Victims Division. If you were a client there and something about it has been sitting wrong with you, that is the number. And if you are looking for a queer-affirming therapist now, this is a fair reason to ask a few more questions than usual, and no reason to stop looking.
