Miley, who has dropped the Cyrus from her social handles and would like you to do the same, released "Bass Persuades" on Thursday, September 3. It is the title track and lead single from her tenth studio album, her first for Atlantic after Something Beautiful closed out the Columbia years. The album lands September 18. It was directed by Mert Alas, whose résumé includes Madonna's "Girls Gone Wild" and the Jeremy Allen White Calvin Klein campaign, so you already know the lighting. Miley walks into a shadowy club full of men in leather pants and Muir caps. The song opens on a spoken "Let's go" in the great "It's Britney, bitch" tradition, then drops into an eighties electro groove that would not be out of place at the Eagle at 1 a.m. "The kids don't wanna dance," she complains in the chorus, before the pitch: "We can't stay like this forever. Let's surrender to the night, put our bodies close together." By the end she is dancing down a neon street at night and the internet has already compared it to "Thriller."
The top YouTube comment reads "This is so Britney Spears, Lady Gaga and Madonna CODED," and honestly, the video knows. Something Beautiful was the ambitious one, critically loved, debuted at number four and under-sold. Bass Persuades is the one where she remembers who buys the tickets. The press statement calls the record "powerful, vulnerable, sweet and strong" and "every part of life in between." The video calls it a dark room and a bass bin. Both can be true.
she still will not tour
She still does not tour, and has said so for years. There are exactly two dates: the Hollywood Bowl on October 16 and 18. Tickets go on general sale September 10. If you have ever wanted to see a pop star perform a leather-bar record in a natural amphitheatre under the Los Angeles stars, this is the fortnight to set an alarm.
