"We chose each other quietly," Sophia Bush writes. Quietly is one word for it. Another is for over a year, while the rest of us were refreshing their Instagrams like it was a job.

Bush and former U.S. women's national team goalkeeper Ashlyn Harris are married. They wed in a private ceremony in upstate New York in summer 2025, Vogue reported on Wednesday in an exclusive that pairs a joint interview with an excerpt from Bush's memoir, And I Will Tell You Mine: Notes from a Life in Progress, out Oct. 27. People and Page Six have the same account: Harris's children, Sloane and Ocean, were there, and Bush's best friend Nia Batts got ordained online to officiate.

what the wedding was like

Low stakes, by design. "The kids were just running and happy, and we picked flowers from the property and our daughter Sloane was holding them," Harris told Vogue. "It was so fun for them, because it wasn't this pressure-filled day that's too much for young kids."

"It was so precious, and zero pressure," Bush said. "I will never forget it, and I think wedding days sometimes aren't like that."

In the excerpt, Bush says they called city hall first and walked in a few days later, then held the backyard ceremony at the farm: Harris in a tuxedo, Bush in a black velvet dress she found in her own basement. Every bride in America just felt personally attacked.

why they kept it quiet

Bush, 44, has been on screens since One Tree Hill. Harris, 40, spent her career in goal. Bush put it to her wife in the interview: "You've been playing in stadiums in front of 60,000 people since you were 15 or 16, and I started playing a character for tens of millions of people when I was 21." Some things, she said, you start to keep for yourself.

The relationship has never exactly been private in the other sense. Bush came out as queer in an April 2024 Glamour cover story that also confirmed she was dating Harris, NBC News and CBS News reported at the time. Both had divorces filed in 2023: Bush from Grant Hughes in August, and Harris from fellow USWNT star Ali Krieger in September, per ESPN.

Which brings us to the scheduling. Krieger and Joanna Lohman are a team on the new season of The Amazing Race, which premiered on CBS at 9:30 p.m. ET on Wednesday, according to Northern Virginia Magazine and Fubo. The Vogue piece went up that same day at noon. The Krieger fandom noticed. We are merely reporting the times.

Harris, for her part, made the case for saying anything at all: "We know the love we share. We understand how sacred and how pure our love is. But the visibility piece matters, because there are still kids hiding who don't feel seen."

And Bush, on the word itself: "You're not my partner, you know? You're my wife. And it feels so amazing to say that."
