"I don't do this with men very often."

As openers go, it's a strong one. The president of the United States said it on Monday night at the Covelli Centre in Youngstown, Ohio, standing near Sen. Jon Husted, and then he kept going.

"I started examining his body because I didn't know he was a great athlete and I looked and I watched up and down. I looked at his ass and I looked at the whole," Trump said, trailing off, "and then I looked at his hands. Look at his hands. He's got these like claws." That's from the full rally upload, about three minutes into his speech.

what trump said about husted

The occasion for the inspection: Trump had just found out Husted played football. Husted, 59, was an All-American defensive back at the University of Dayton, Mediaite and The Daily Beast both note, and Trump credited former NFL coach Jon Gruden, who introduced him, for telling him. "You are a great athlete. I didn't know that because he doesn't talk about that," Trump said. "Congratulations. Now they finally know."

Now they finally know. About his ass.

he came back for seconds

Roughly 40 minutes later, while thanking Husted for submarine work, Trump told him to stand up and looked again. "Look at that jawline. I'm telling you, I never saw that. I never studied him. And now I study him," he said, per the same video. "Look at the jawline."

Husted is in a tight race against Sherrod Brown, the one where Republicans have spent this month telling Ohio voters to be afraid of trans people. We wrote about the $10 million ad and Brown's answer to it. So the party's closing message in Ohio is, apparently, protect the children, and also the president has been studying the senator's body and would like the arena to know.

We are saying nothing about Jon Husted, who did not choose any of this. We are saying that if a Democratic president had stood on a stage and described looking a male senator "up and down," it would be on a loop on Fox for a week. The Daily Beast says it asked Husted's team for comment; we could not find any response by Tuesday afternoon.
