the face of looksmaxxing has been charged with rape. the gay men and trans women who clocked that subculture got there first.

via NBC News, IBTimes UK, The Advocate and Out and Dexerto. The charges were first reported by The Bulwark.

Docket 2626CR000731, Orleans District Court, Massachusetts. A judge named Marion Broidrick found probable cause on September 4, and the criminal complaint issued on September 8. The defendant is twenty years old, has more than 400,000 followers on Kick, and is the closest thing the internet has to a spokesman for hitting yourself in the face with a hammer.

what the docket says

Braden Peters, who streams as Clavicular, is charged with one count of rape, one count of drugging a person for sexual intercourse, and one count of procuring liquor for someone under twenty-one. The first two are felonies. The charges concern an alleged incident on May 23, 2025 in Chatham, Massachusetts. His arraignment is set for October 14.

The Bulwark reported the charges first, on Monday night. NBC News then went and read the online court records itself, and IBTimes UK pulled the public docket, which it notes carries no further evidentiary material. That last part is worth saying plainly rather than burying: what exists today is a charging document and a court date. Nothing has been tried, nothing has been proven, and the man is entitled to say so.

what he has said back

He has. His representative, Mitchell Jackson, told The Bulwark, in a statement NBC News carried: "Braden Peters has not been physically served. As usual the Bulwark is exaggerating." Local 10 reports he has denied the allegations through his attorney.

On Tuesday Peters answered for himself, on X, and it is worth being precise about what he did and did not say. Per Dexerto, he posted twice. Neither post addressed the criminal charges. Both went after the woman suing him in the separate Florida case, whose motives he characterized as financial, and he attached material about her that we are not going to reproduce. "Happens to all successful young men, people try to come for your money," he wrote. "Greed is evil." He called the lawsuit "really petty of you."

There is separately a civil case in Miami-Dade County, brought by an influencer who sued under her own name, Aleksandra Vasilevna Mendoza, who posts as Alorah. She alleges Peters gave her vodka and had sexual contact with her while she was intoxicated in 2025. Outlets have noted that the timelines appear to line up, and some have gone further and called the cases linked. Our read of what is actually on the record is that the timelines match and nobody has established the rest. The person named in the criminal complaint has not been identified publicly, and will not be identified here.

One more thing, because it is circulating and it is wrong. A number of widely shared posts have described the charge as the rape of a child under sixteen. Neither of the two newsrooms that went and read the records says that. Both say rape. If the charging language turns out to be narrower or broader than that, we will say so here, with the date on it.

what the subculture is

Looksmaxxing is the optimization of your own face and body by whatever means are to hand. At the soft end it is grooming and the gym. At the hard end, per the Advocate's reporting in March, it is steroids, unregulated fillers, and bone smashing, which is exactly what it sounds like: striking your own facial bones in the hope they heal more prominently. The same piece reports that Peters says steroids left him infertile, and notes his associations with Andrew Tate and Nick Fuentes.

who said it first

Here is why this is on a gay website. In March, the adult performer Judah thee Glutelord posted a video arguing that the whole enterprise was something gay men would recognize instantly.

"The whole thing about the Clavicular, 'looksmaxxing,' macho, testosterone, pretty boy Olympics competition is that it is literally just toxic muscle gay circuit party culture escaping containment and being transmitted to straight people," he said. "That's the dance floor at a circuit party."

Then he made the argument that is the reason we are writing any of this. The difference, he said, is that at a circuit party the competition has somewhere to go. "The peacocking can reach its zenith and then be sublimated sexually because we're trying to have sex with each other, but these dudes are not interested in having sex with each other," he said. If it cannot be sublimated sexually, he went on, "then the most likely pathway for it to be sublimated is violence." And: "I'm just telling you right now, this is not going to be pretty." Portland spent this week watching a different live streamer get charged with assault outside a bar that shows women's sports, which is not this story and rhymes with it anyway.

Now the part that stops this being a neat one. He said that in March. The conduct Peters is charged with is alleged to have taken place in May 2025, ten months earlier. So this is not a prophecy that came true, and we are not going to sell it to you as one. It is something less tidy and more useful: a correct read of a subculture, delivered by a person that subculture would never have taken a note from, about a danger that was already in the room before he opened his mouth.

He was not the only one who saw it. In April, three trans women walked up to Peters mid-livestream and told him what he was actually doing. "You know that trans women are the OG looksmaxxers?" one said. "We originated the program," said another. "You're, like, copying us, no shade." Peters, to his limited credit, largely agreed: "You guys were using a lot of the words in the trans subreddits in 2021." The clip went past three million views and was filed by the internet under funny.

None of this is a defense of anyone and none of it is a verdict. The charges are charges, October 14 is October 14, and a court will do what courts do. But if you are wondering why the looksmaxxing guy has turned up in a gay publication, it is this: the people who understood this subculture earliest, and said so out loud, on camera, to his face, were a gay porn star and three trans women. Everybody had the analysis. Nobody wanted it from them.
